Your course covers the content. Whether it changes anyone is left to chance.

The designer reads for exactly that, and «flags the mechanisms you've left to chance.»

What it does

The Learner’s Arc Designer takes the book’s seven mechanisms: the lie, possible selves, self-efficacy, autonomy, competence and relatedness, cognitive apprenticeship, legitimate peripheral participation, and communities of practice. You write how your course engages each. It scores each out of 10, maps the seven as a path and ranks three moves.

Seven movements: 1. Start with the Lie (the belief the experience must shatter; Mezirow’s disorienting dilemma). 2. Make the Stakes Personal (Possible Selves; Self-Efficacy from Bandura’s four sources: mastery experiences, vicarious experience, verbal persuasion, emotional state). 3. Autonomy, Competence, Relatedness (the trinity of transformation). 4. From Outsider to Insider (Legitimate Peripheral Participation; Cognitive Apprenticeship: modelling, coaching, scaffolding, fading). 5. The Community That Confers Identity (Communities of Practice: domain, community, practice). 6. The Ordeal That Breaks and Rebuilds. 7. Resolution and Return.
